Snoring Causes – Effective Snoring Treatment starts by finding it.

Most adult snoring goes untreated because people don’t see it as a real problem and its underlying reasons.
At The Dental Gallery, in Bentleigh East, we look at the structural, muscular and medical causes of snoring, in one place via holistic and personalised approach , so you get lasting snoring solutions, not another quick fix.

What Causes Snoring? Understanding Why You Snore

Snoring is a symptom. The question is: of what?
Snoring happens when airflow is partly blocked while you sleep, and the reason for the blockage is different for everyone. Treating the sound without finding the cause is why so many adults are still snoring years after being told to “just lose weight” or buy an anti-snoring device online.

Structural Causes

A narrow airway, a set-back or recessed jaw or nasal issues mean less room for air to pass, so the soft tissues vibrate under pressure. This is an anatomical problem, and lifestyle changes alone can’t fix it.

Muscular Causes

When the tongue sits low, the lips don’t seal, or the throat muscles lose tone, the airway collapses more easily during sleep. Muscle tone also naturally declines with age, which is one reason snoring often gets worse over time. Myofunctional therapy (muscle retraining) helps here.

Medical Causes

A chronically blocked nose, allergies, inflammation, weight changes, alcohol, some medications and changes in nervous system regulation can all affect airway muscle tone.

Snoring or Sleep Apnoea? Know the Symptoms

Step 1: Comprehensive Intake

You complete a detailed sleep and health history. If you have a partner, we encourage them to add what they’ve observed.

Step 2: Assessment

Our integrative sleep GP reviews your sleep, medical history and clinical examination findings.

Step 3: Targeted Diagnostics

We only order what’s clinically needed, but before we order anything, we explain what each test is for and what we’re looking for. If it’s clinically indicated, we can provide a home sleep study, interpreted and reported by accredited sleep medicine specialists. This sleep test shows whether your snoring has crossed into obstructive sleep apnoea and how severe it is. You sleep in your own bed, not a hospital lab. In some cases, we recommend 3D jaw imaging. This lets our dentist assess the deeper structure of your jaw and airway, which a standard examination can’t fully reveal.

Step 4: Your Personalised Snoring Treatment Plan

You get a clear treatment plan with sequenced steps, expected outcomes and follow-up, so you know exactly what happens next.

Snoring Treatment Options in Melbourne for Adults

Evidence-based snoring solutions – matched your cause.

Your treatment is decided by what we find.

Medical Management

We address nasal congestion, inflammation, weight, alcohol, medications and other medical and lifestyle factors that affect airway muscle tone during sleep. This is often the missing piece after structural treatment.

Custom Snoring Mouth Guard

A custom-fitted anti-snoring mouthpiece worn at night. It holds your lower jaw slightly forward to keep the airway open. It’s an evidence-based option for snoring and mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnoea, and a proven sleep apnoea mouth guard for many patients who can’t use CPAP.
Unlike an off-the-shelf snoring gum shield or mouth shield for snoring, it’s made for your mouth and adjusted over time for comfort and effect.

CPAP and CPAP Alternatives

CPAP remains the gold standard treatment for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea. If it’s the right option for you, we’ll refer you to our network of CPAP providers across Melbourne. If you’ve struggled with CPAP, we can help you find alternatives that work, including mandibular advancement splints and positional therapy.

Myofunctional Therapy for Snoring and OSA

Targeted exercises to retrain the tongue, lip and throat muscles to reduce airway collapse during
sleep. Myofunctional therapy is used alongside other treatments.

Stop Snoring : Frequently Asked Questions

How can I stop snoring?

The most effective way to stop snoring is to treat its cause. Sleeping on your side, cutting back on alcohol and treating a blocked nose can help some people. Persistent snoring, though, usually has a structural, muscular or medical driver that needs a proper assessment. Once we know the cause, we can match you with the right snoring treatment, whether that’s a mandibular advancement splint, medical management, myofunctional therapy or CPAP.

How do I stop a snorer (partner) from snoring?

You can’t fix it for them, but you can help them get assessed. Lead with health rather than frustration. For example, “I’ve noticed you stop breathing sometimes, and it worries me” tends to land better than complaints about the noise. Partners are welcome to join the first appointment, since they often notice symptoms, the snorer can’t.

Is snoring dangerous, or just annoying?

Snoring on its own may not be dangerous, but it can be a sign of obstructive sleep apnoea. Undiagnosed OSA is a significant risk factor for high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, metabolic syndrome, cognitive decline and drowsy-driving accidents. Even without OSA, chronic snoring fragments sleep for you and your partner. Long-term heavy snoring has also been associated with changes to the soft tissues of the throat and the major blood vessels in the neck.

Do anti-snoring devices and mouthpieces from the chemist work?

Some over-the-counter anti-snoring devices, such as boil-and-bite mouthguards (commonly referred to as a mouth shield for snoring), nasal dilators and chin straps, reduce the noise for some people. But none of them can tell you why you snore. If the cause is sleep apnoea, a generic device can quiet the snoring while the underlying condition goes untreated. Off-the-shelf mouthpieces can also be uncomfortable and may strain the jaw or shift the teeth. A custom snoring mouth guard, fitted after a proper assessment, is safer and more effective.

Will losing weight help me stop snoring?

Sometimes it helps, especially if weight gain coincided with the snoring first starting. But many people of a healthy weight snore because of jaw structure, nasal obstruction or low muscle tone. Weight loss can’t change any of those. Our assessment identifies which factors apply to you.

I’ve tried CPAP but can’t use it. Can you help?

Yes. Many patients come to us unable to tolerate CPAP or only using it some of the time. We assess whether an alternative, such as a mandibular advancement splint, myofunctional therapy or a combined approach, can give you comparable results. We also look at whether any underlying medical or structural factors can be treated to reduce the severity of your OSA.
