Children’s Dentistry > Diet

Ensuring your child has a healthy, balanced diet is just as important for their teeth and gums as it is for their overall health.  That’s because starchy, sugary foods and drinks will react to the mouth’s bacteria to produce acid, which attacks your child’s tooth enamel, causing decay and potential tooth loss.

That’s why it’s a good idea to reduce your child’s intake and frequency of sugary and starchy drinks and snacks, to help them to maintain the best oral health.  Try delicious substitutes such as cheese, fresh fruit and vegetables instead of sweet, sugary snacks or soft drinks. And remember that rinsing with water after eating can also help dilute the harmful effects of acid. Avoid foods and drinks like fizzy drinks, sports drinks,  juices, mints, lollies, and chocolates.
